30 sweet sleep tips

Have you ever stayed up at night, desperate for sleep that never seems to come? Even if you close your eyes, your mind refuses to stop thinking. You need to sleep desperately so that you can perform in the day. How do you get that much needed rest?

A baby can do it but you can't. Wouldn't it be nice to sleep like a baby?

Here are some ideas to stop insomnia. Some are recommended, others are things one might think of when desperate for sleep, but certainly are not worth the repercussions.

Get a full body massage with lavender oil or any relaxing oil blend. (Recommended)

Get hit on a head with a mallet (not recommended)

Engage in physical bedroom activities with your spouse to tire yourselves out so you would both sleep soundly (recommended)

Insomnia remedy #4

Go for a run every morning. If you run regularly, you would feel invigorated in the hours after the run but would probably be able to sleep better at night. (recommended)

Go for a leisurely walk after dinner to unwind. (recommended)

Count sheep. (works for some people)

Take sleeping pills (not recommended as a long term solution. People have died from sleeping pill overdose) Better to see a doctor and follow the doctor's prescription.

Take cough syrup and cold medicine (not recommended unless you really have a cough and cold and the doctor prescribed that medicine for your current illness)

Insomnia remedy #9

Put a few drops of lavender essential oil on your pillow. The relaxing scent may help soothe you to sleep. (recommended but mild)

Take a long bath just before you go to bed. (recommended)

Drink a cup of chamomile tea. (recommended)

Give your feet a thorough massage. Pay particular attention to the soles of your feet, just beneath the arch. Make a fist and run the knuckles down each foot from toes to the bottom of the heel. Find a hard, tense spot, massage that firmly with your thumbs.

Diffuse a relaxing fragrant oil in your room for a more soothing environment, condusive to sleep. (recommended)

Take melatonin supplements if your country allows it (over the counter sales of melatonin is prohibited in some countries). It is actually a hormone that your body produces which regulates sleep, amongst other biological functions.

Separate work and personal life. Don't bring work into your bedroom. Leave your computer, and anything related to work outside your bedroom and reserve your bedroom for sleep.(recommended) Never work in bed.

Insomnia remedy #16

Bright lights stimulate your mind. That can keep you awake. The television and computer screen emit bright light, so switch of both an hour before bedtime. Read a book or dim the lights and listen to music in the hour before you sleep. (recommended)

Pick a fight with a guy twice your size (or twice your weight). Offer him your jaw so he can deliver a knock out punch. (not recommended) That should put you to sleep. You might even get hospitalization leave for that.

In summer, wear 100% cotton pajamas to sleep. It is cool, comfortable and absorbs sweat easily. It keeps you cool and comfortable so that it would be easier for you to sleep on a hot night, especially if you don't have air-conditioning. (recommended)

On a cold night, or if you have air-conditioning, indulge in the comfort of flannel pajamas. The soft buttery feel against the skin lets you sleep in comfort. (recommended)

Thinking too much about something can keep yuo awake. Keep a journal by your bedside and if you happen to have an idea or think of something you must do tomorrow, write a note to yourself, then forget about it. Tomorrow has its own worries which you can deal with then. No point in fretting about it now, since there is nothing you can do about it at the moment.

Are you too toxic to sleep? Your insomnia could be a symptom of that. Too much toxins accumulated in your body interferes with your body's processes. You might want to clean up the junk. Try eating healthier, cut out refined sugar, wheat and caffeine. Especially the caffeine which is a stimulant that can keep you awake. See if that helps your insomnia.

Don't go to be angry. Resolve your conflicts or come to some form of agreement and forgiveness before you sleep.

Keep the bedroom dark when you sleep as melatonin, the sleep hormone is produced at night when it is dark.

Don't exercise withing 3 to 4 hours before you go to bed as you need time for your heart rate and adrenaline to go down before you can sleep.

Keep the bedroom quiet when you sleep. Turn off the music, switch off the music and if need be, soundproof the room.

Wear socks and gloves when you go to bed to keep your hands and feet warm

Avoid playing computer games just before you sleep as you may get too stimulated to sleep.

If you have insomnia, avoid afternoon naps and save your sleep for bedtime to relish it and get your clock back to normal.

Avoid watching exciting games or matches before you sleep as you might get too stimulated to sleep.
